We have already passed the tiring midterm exam, especially for 5th-semester students who take internships this semester. Time flies in the blink of an eye, in less than two months, the odd semester will end soon. This semester's final exam and project are waiting for you at the end of the year. After a short holiday, we eventually had to face an even semester. But, for those who will be the fourth-semester students, what awaits you there?
It’s clear that you need to take several mandatory courses, such as Integrated Academic Writing, Integrated Academic Presentation, English Morphology-Syntax, English Drama, Introduction to Research and Cultural Theory (PPTK), and a language course—you can choose from French, Arabic, Japanese, or Korean. Choosing the language course you took in the third semester is preferable. In addition, you can choose two optional courses: Media, Language, and Culture, or Entrepreneurship.
Before the fourth semester starts, third-semester students must decide which major course to pursue. The English Department offers three major courses: linguistics, literature, and cultural studies.
To enroll in one of the major courses, you need to have at least a B grade in the relevant introduction course. If your grade is BC, you can still take the course but must retake the introduction course with second-semester students. Just keep in mind that you need to fill out the form quickly, or you might get kicked out of your preferred major course (speaking from personal experience!). Make sure the major course you choose is something you genuinely want to pursue and can stick with it until the end of your studies in the English Department.
The major courses offer three courses: two in linguistics and one in literature and cultural studies. In Linguistics, you will take English Semantics-Pragmatics and Second Language Acquisition, while in Literature and Cultural Studies, the only course offered is Critical Thinking. The classes from both courses (Literature and Cultural Studies) will be combined.
Apart from choosing one major course, the English Drama course is one of the most anticipated parts of the fourth semester. At the end of the semester, the entire class will perform a drama as the final project. This project is fun but also exhausting. You’ll get to act and dress according to the drama you perform, but it can be frustrating because of the amount of preparation required, especially since it takes place during final exam week.
The fourth semester will give you a new perspective on studying in the English Department, especially at UNAIR. Worry not; you are one step ahead before meeting the frustration of senior year. Just do your assignments, quizzes, and presentations, and then you will be fine. The fourth semester might be boring for some people, but you can make it different by being active in classes or other activities.
