Annisa Ahmad, an English Literature student from Universitas Airlangga, class of 2022, has successfully joined a student exchange program to the prestigious National University of Singapore (NUS). Her excitement shines as she shares her experience and insights for other students hoping to achieve the same.
“It feels amazing, honestly! This was way beyond my expectations,” Annisa admits. “I didn’t have any plans for an exchange at the start of the year, and now it’s all happening. I feel incredibly grateful.”
Annisa first heard about the student exchange opportunity from Baskoro, a senior in Student Executive Board of our faculty. As her mentor in the organization, Baskoro suggested her to consider applying for the DiscoverNUS program. Annisa shared, “At first, I wasn’t confident because I had minimal preparation and relied mostly on my previous achievements. Thankfully, NUS accepted me, and I’m so grateful to study here.”
For those aiming to apply, Annisa highlights that NUS requires strong English communication skills and a solid portfolio or CV. “I submitted my ELPT certificate and a CV with my organization experiences from my second year.”
However, she mentions that the biggest challenge for her exchange journey has been finances. “Singapore is the second most expensive country in the world, and I found costs here are five times higher than in Indonesia. Financial planning is very important before considering this exchange,” she advises.
In terms of essential preparations, Annisa emphasized that administrative tasks are crucial after acceptance. She handled her visa two months before departure, as the visa-free period for Singapore is only 30 days. “I also arranged for on-campus dorm accommodation, which was independent of NUS. Additionally, I had to request an official permit from UNAIR to attend the program, and I applied for financial aid from the university.”
For students who want to follow in her footsteps, Annisa has an important piece of advice: “Don’t hesitate to try if you feel prepared. I had doubts at first, but I was also very curious about studying at NUS. I’m glad I decided to be brave and confident.”
The program is open each semester, but at UNAIR, it is only offered to third-year students. Annisa confirms that SKS credits can be converted, up to a maximum of 20 SKS, depending on the policies of each study program.
Annisa’s journey highlights that with determination, planning, and a bit of courage, international dreams will come true. She hopes her experience encourages other students to take the leap and explore the world of global education.
Her story reminds us all that opportunities await those who are willing to take risks and pursue their passions, one courageous step at a time.
