Facing Challenges in the Media, Language, and Culture (MLC) Class

Last semester, a student majoring in Linguistics, who chose to remain anonymous, took the Media, Language, and Culture (MLC) course. As a Linguistics student, she felt that this class was quite challenging. MLC is a course that focuses on the interaction between media, language, and culture. It may not fully match her academic interests, which lean more toward pure linguistics. From the beginning of the class, the students realized that the materials taught were more related to cultural aspects than language itself. This made it a bit difficult for her to understand some of the concepts presented.
"I feel like I'm out of my comfort zone," she said. She explained that even though she has a strong basic in linguistics, the interdisciplinary approach in MLC required them to adapt to a new way of thinking. One of the biggest challenges in this class was the collaborative exam. Students were asked to work in groups to complete certain tasks and presentations, which was difficult since this course depended on personal perspective to criticize something.
"Working in a group is hard," she said. "Everyone has different opinions and ways of working. Sometimes, I find it hard to bring our ideas together." Additionally, group-based grading made her worry about how her contribution would affect the final grade. Despite the difficulties, she found some positive aspects from the experience. She started to understand the importance of cultural context in language use and how media can shape people's perceptions of certain languages and cultures.
By the end of the semester, even though not all aspects of the MLC course felt easy for her, she is proud to have overcome the challenge. She recognized that every learning experience brings valuable lessons and that adaptability is very important in the academic world. With a new sense of confidence, she is ready to face the next course with greater determination.
