Exploring the Feminism Through Movies

What do you know about feminism?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, feminism is the belief that women should have the same rights, power, and opportunities as men and be treated equally. Feminism is a movement and philosophy that aims to destroy patriarchal norms that are detrimental to women and other marginalized genders. Feminism promotes the idea that gender should not determine a person's opportunities or status in society. Meanwhile, although historically associated with women's rights, modern feminism also fights for the rights of men and non-binary individuals to live free from restrictive gender roles.

Why does feminism matter today? Gender equality remains a critical issue worldwide, affecting various aspects of life, including  women's rights, health, education, and participation in decision-making. Furthermore, women and girls continue to face discrimination, violence, and systemic barriers in many countries. Feminism helps create a more just world where everyone is respected and treated equally, regardless of gender. It is not about hating men, but about justice and respect for all.

Here are  some recommendations for movies that explore powerful feminist themes through diverse narratives and characters. First, there is Hidden Figures (2016), which  highlights the real-life stories of African American women mathematicians at NASA who fought racism and sexism to contribute to monumental space missions, showcasing women's resilience and leadership in the face of systemic inequalities. The second one, Wild (2014), is a personal journey of a woman confronting her past and reclaiming her independence by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, symbolizing self-discovery and empowerment. The other is Revenge (2018), this film subverts the traditional revenge trope by depicting a woman who survives brutal violence and takes control of her own destiny, emphasizing strength and resistance against male domination. Therefore, these movies provide rich material for exploring feminist ideas about gender equality, empowerment, and breaking social norms.
