Formula E: A Smart Way to Promote Sustainability

Have you ever heard of Formula E? It is one of the single-seater motorsport series. One of the key differences between Formula E and other motorsports is that it utilises electricity as its sole energy source. Formula E is also considered the world’s first all-electric single-seater motorsport.

In a season, Formula E runs for about 6 to 7 months, 18 rounds in a season, which usually starts in December and ends in August. In fact, Formula E is considered shorter compared to other single-seater motorsport series like Formula 1, which lasts for about 9 months with 24 rounds in a season. Now the question is: what is the reason behind this?

Formula E usually takes place on temporary circuits in major cities, such as Jakarta, London, and Berlin. Building a temporary circuit involves setting up grandstands, placing barriers, preparing hospitality areas, and more. Then, all of these must be dismantled after the race ends. The process of building and dismantling the circuit not only costs a lot, but also creates emissions. For instance, each team has to transport their logistics every time they have a race scheduled. As a result, a single race already costs a lot of money and contributes to emissions.

To reduce these problems, Formula E puts sustainability and efficiency at the core of its races. For example, in transporting logistics, Formula E tries to use transportation methods with the lowest carbon footprint. In addition, Formula E has partnered with DHL, a logistics company responsible for competing teams' logistics moves, to find the shortest and most efficient routes. Formula E also conducts two rounds in several cities. For example, in the upcoming season, cities like Jeddah, Berlin, Tokyo, and Shanghai will be hosting 2 races in the same location. This strategy is considered a smart move because it allows Formula E to manage their finances more effectively without having to add races in other cities, which would increase costs and lead to higher emissions. This enables Formula E to effectively manage their financial resources while still keeping the race enjoyable to watch.

In conclusion, Formula E is a smart way to promote sustainability and efficiency. Although it only spans 6 to 7 months in a season, Formula E has good reasons behind this. Formula E is not only about racing, but also about balancing competition and sustainability.
