Holding On Too Tight? Chloe Beale’s Attachment to the Bellas

Barden Bellas, the all-female a capella group from Barden University. Their charms are in their ability to sing with their mouths. “Everything is from our mouths,” said Chloe when she explained it to Beca, the main character. That’s right, it is a fictional group from the Pitch Perfect series. However, we’re not going to talk about the movie or the Bellas themselves; the main topic here is the co-leader of Barden Bellas, Chloe Beale.

Throughout the movie, Chloe is depicted as a bubbly and cheerful character. She is a stoic character, meaning that from the beginning to the end of the story, she stays the same, not having much drastic change. Chloe is seen as someone who keeps the group together by mediating them when there are differences of opinion. In the first movie, Aubrey and Beca often collide with each other, making Chloe their peacemaker. She loves the Bellas so dearly that she will do anything to keep them one.

In Pitch Perfect 2, Chloe claims that the group is her life, and she does not know what to do if she loses it when Beca tells her to think something other than Bellas after their humiliating performance in front of the President of the United States of America. At the time, their career was almost over. Chloe starts to find a way to get their reputation back. She is indeed the most ambitious one.

However, Chloe seems not to realize that her love for the Bellas has prevented her from something more significant in her life. The group is like an invisible rock. She neglects her responsibility and only cares for the Bellas. She even intentionally failed her Russian literature for three years so she could be with the Bellas. At this point, I don’t know if I should call this a dedication or just a pure obsession.

It’s like Chloe has an attachment issue. People are often drawn to activities they are passionate about and enjoy. Singing and performing with the Bellas likely bring Chloe immense joy and fulfillment, which makes her refuse to let go. Moreover, since Chloe feels this deep connection with the Bellas, it is hard for her to find something else because it has already become her identity. Without Bella, Chloe has nothing to do with her life. It’s not necessarily bad, but the fear of losing will haunt you if you cannot control what you feel. In Chloe’s case, her Bellas find their dreams and passions while she is stuck in keeping the group together. Perhaps all those shared experiences of rehearsals, competitions, performances, and even their bickering create strong emotional ties for her.

Chloe really is a dedicated Bellas. Her vocal nodules in the first movie do not stop her from singing with them. They only prove that she is determined to do everything for the Bellas. Moreover, when she meets Emily for the first time, she immediately recognizes her mother, the old generation of the Bellas. In the end, Chloe finds a way to grow with herself. Life is moving forward, and a college acapella group will always have new members, new generations. It is truly an amazing experience, but pursuing reality while keeping those memories in our hearts is better.
